In 1979, a doctor named Norman Jacobson collaborated with a computer prodigy named Philip Ray to develop a way to deliver nicotine to the bloodstream via the lungs while removing the other harmful components included in cigarettes.

Their ultimate device was really not electrical. There was no heat, despite the fact that it looked like a cigarette. A cigarette-like tube was filled with a cartridge containing nicotine-soaked paper. To release the nicotine from the cartridge, addicts would inhale.

Various tobacco corporations sought to develop a ‘safe' version of the cigarette between then and the early 2000s. Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, used these nicotine treatments to quit smoking in the early 2000s, an addiction that had killed his father. He realized that the only way to control his nicotine cravings was to smoke, so he set out to create a safer alternative.

He invented an electronic cigarette that delivered nicotine without any of the thousands of potentially dangerous compounds inherent in tobacco smoke. His electronic cigarette design was a tremendous hit in China, and it quickly spread to other nations, with the first ones appearing in the UK in 2005 and the United States in 2007.

The World Health Organization stated in 2008 that electronic cigarettes should not be sold as an alternative to smoking, but did not specify whether they had a positive or negative effect, paving the path for their global popularity. In the United Kingdom alone, it is believed that over 2.6 million people use electronic cigarettes.

However, because of the higher viscosity, consumers feel less of a throat hit, which is the part that most closely resembles smoking a cigarette. Producers and vapers have been testing different mixtures of VG and PG since this revelation to find the optimum mix of hit on the inhale and vapor plumes on the exhale.
